In a significant stride towards strengthening peacebuilding capacities, the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) and its youth initiative, the MSU-IIT Youth Chain of Peace (MYCoP), recently concluded a two-week intensive training at the Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute (MPI)'s 25th Annual Peacebuilding Training. Held from May 19-23 and May 26-30, 2025, at Mergrande Ocean Resort, Talom,Davao City, the program resonated with MPI’s theme this year: "Bridging Theory and Practice: Transformative Approaches to Peacebuilding."
Seven dedicated participants, generously funded by GIZ-SAUP and GIZ-CPS Philippines and supported by MSU-IIT, represented IPDM and MYCoP. IPDM was proudly represented by Juvy Cambaya, Peace Action Coordinator, and Jonathan Gelogo, Project Technical Staff II, while MYCoP sent Wenn Nicole Daroy, Abdul Haleem Racmat, Toni Catherine Gorgolon, Abdul Nasser Manarondong, and Lance Andrie Dublin.
The intensive curriculum of the MPI training provided a comprehensive exploration of peacebuilding methodologies. During the first week, Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute (MPI) offered foundational courses such as Fundamentals of Conflict Sensitivity and Transformation (FCST), Strategic Peacebuilding (SPB), Trauma-Informed and Resilience-oriented Practice (TRP), and Education for Peace (EP) – a crucial component of Peacebuilding for all attendees. The second week offered specialized and thematic modules, including Designing Peace Programs (DPP), Praxis of Forgiveness and Reconciliation amidst Polarization (FPRP), and Peace Games (PG), offering practical tools and approaches.
This rigorous training is poised to significantly benefit IPDM's ongoing work through its "re-echoing" initiative. The participants are expected to cascade their newfound knowledge and skills within the institute and to various communities, ensuring that the insights gained at MPI have a ripple effect. This commitment to knowledge sharing will empower IPDM to develop more effective and contextually relevant peacebuilding programs and interventions across Mindanao.
The two-week training directly contributes to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by equipping individuals with the skills to foster peaceful and inclusive societies. Moreover, the focus on conflict sensitivity, trauma-informed practices, and peace education aligns with broader SDGs related to well-being, quality education, and reduced inequalities. Participants expressed how the training deepened their understanding of complex peace challenges and equipped them with practical strategies to contribute to a more peaceful and just Mindanao.
The training bears witness to MSU-IIT’s pursuit to foster a resilient Mindanao through transformative learning experiences and peacebuilding activities.
