Project RISE Conducts Grade 1 Literacy Assessment with Trained Reading Ambassadors

by RISE Project Team | Jul 08 2025

Project RISE conducted two key initiatives this June as part of its commitment to improving early-grade literacy: training Reading Ambassadors and administering a baseline reading assessment for Grade 1 learners in its partner schools within the Iligan City Division.

The reading assessment, held on June 19–20, 2025, focused on Grade 1 sections taught by teachers trained under Project RISE. This assessment was designed to gather baseline data on learners' reading skills before implementing RISE-developed lessons and instructional materials for the school year. The results will inform future instruction and help measure student progress over time.

To support the assessment process, 19 volunteer students from the Department of Professional Education (DPRE), College of Education (CED), were trained as Reading Ambassadors. Their training took place on May 30, 2025, at the CED ICT Laboratory.

The training equipped the ambassadors with the necessary skills to supervise Grade 1 learners while assessments were being conducted, as teachers and RISE team members were engaged in administering one-on-one assessments.

Dr. Ruben Abucayon led a session on professional norms and ethical conduct, emphasizing care, integrity, and responsibility when engaging with young learners. Afterward, Dr. Ciedelle Grageda shared creative strategies for early-grade instruction, including integrating music and singing to promote literacy and learner engagement.

Throughout the day, the ambassadors demonstrated effective use of instructional materials and showcased storytelling skills, refining their expression and delivery to better engage young readers. In the afternoon, they helped prepare visual aids and worksheets for their field assignments.

The following 19 Reading Ambassadors supported this effort: Faith Marie Diaz, Niña Goliat, Claire Marie M. Villamor, Jesther M. Engnan, Eurayle Kyrie B. Abad, Lorecelle P. Villaroya, Caryl P. Bastistiana, Princess Ann M. Romero, Cherrey Frenzy C. Guillena, Pearl Jesyl T. Pardillo, Selwyn Jan M. Pancito, Joven N. Lisondra, Rea Fe E. Alderite, Mernel J. Galinato, Lucille H. Tabamo, Almerah B. Olama, Elisha Mae O. Oliveros, Flavielle Rose P. Tecson, and Jesel Gallano.

Their active participation and dedication were instrumental in ensuring the smooth implementation of the reading assessment and supporting the broader goal of strengthening literacy foundations in Project RISE partner schools.
