Nov 20 2025

Held on October 13–16, 2025 in Tagaytay City, the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) marked another milestone in innovation after being one of the finalists for the Executive Director’s Award for Top Revenue in Technology Commercialization (Patent/Utility Model) during the Regional Agri-Aqua Innovation System Enhancement (RAISE) Summit Week 2025, organized by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD).
Conferred by Dr. Reynaldo V. Ebora, Executive Director of DOST-PCAARRD, the recognition acknowledges MSU-IIT’s significant accomplishments in generating income through technology commercialization, particularly under RAISE 2 Project 1A: Enhancement of the Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IPTBM) in MSU-IIT, underscoring the Institute’s strong commitment to innovation, entrepreneurship, and research translation within the national science and technology ecosystem.
Anchored on the theme Building Bridges through ALIGNment, CONNECTion, and SYNChronization for Agri-Aqua Innovation, the summit brought together 94 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Research and Development Institutes (RDIs) nationwide. The event served as a platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and recognition of institutional excellence in research and technology transfer.

Representing MSU-IIT were Ms. Juvy T. Cambaya, JD, Project Leader of RAISE 2 Project 1A, and student project members Mr. Abdul Nasser P. Manarondong and Ms. Shakira Farhana T. Derico. They showcased the University’s IP-protected technologies and research outputs during the Agri-Aqua Technology Business Incubation (ATBI) Conference and Incubatee Summit, a highlight of the week-long event.
Ms. Juvy T. Cambaya, Project Leader, participated in the plenary sessions and Spinoff Training and Presentation of Outputs, where she engaged in dialogues on technology transfer governance, spinoff enterprise formation, and policy integration.
Reflecting on the experience, Cambaya emphasized that the recognition was not just a reward but a testament to institutional persistence and shared leadership.
“This award affirms MSU-IIT’s continuing effort to transform research into innovation that benefits communities. The RAISE program has given us a national platform to align our IPTBM operations with broader innovation goals, anchored in sustainability, inclusion, and peace,” she shared. Cambaya also expressed that the recognition validates years of groundwork under the IPTBM initiative, building systems for intellectual property protection, capacitating researchers, and connecting the university’s technologies to industries and communities.
Mr. Abdul Nasser P. Manarondong, a BS Economics student serving as Project Staff 1 and Lead Exhibitor, expressed that the Summit was more than a professional engagement; it was a transformative learning experience. He led the booth showcasing MSU-IIT’s technologies and engaged directly with researchers, entrepreneurs, and DOST partners.
“Representing MSU-IIT at the national level gave me a deeper appreciation of how innovation connects to economics,” he reflected. “I realized that ideas, when protected and nurtured, can become real economic opportunities for people. It strengthened my commitment to link theory and practice in my own field.”
Meanwhile, Ms. Shakira Farhana T. Derico, a Student Project Member who co-facilitated technology pitching sessions, found the event both empowering and eye-opening. “I learned that communication is essential in innovation,” she said. “It’s not enough to develop a technology; we must also tell its story, to make people understand its purpose and potential. That’s how innovation reaches communities.”
Both students’ participation embodied MSU-IIT’s principle of experiential learning and youth inclusion in research and innovation ecosystems. Through the RAISE Program, they represented the growing generation of Mindanaoan innovators– young, capable, and grounded in both knowledge and empathy.
As one of the finalists for the Executive Director’s Award, MSU-IIT is recognized for its entrepreneurial capability, initiative, and innovation in managing technology commercialization efforts, particularly under its IPTBM framework. This achievement highlighted Mindanao’s vital role in advancing regional innovation systems through science, technology, and inclusive development.
Through its IPTBM, MSU-IIT plans to enhance training programs on IP valuation, research translation, and spinoff formation, while continuing to mentor students as the next generation of innovators and technology managers.
