Project CLIMA: Women-led climate change resilience initiative strengthens community stewardship in Bayug Island

Nov 17 2025

Project CLIMA (Community Empowerment, Leadership of Women in Climate Action, Inclusive Sustainability, Mitigation and Adaptation Practices, Advocacy for Climate Justice)—spearheaded by Jaypee S. Yongco from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension—mobilized students and community partners in a meaningful climate resilience undertaking in Bayug Island on November 16, 2025. This initiative was organized in collaboration with the Gender and Development (GAD) Center, the National Service Training Corps, and the LGU Hinaplanon.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land)—Project CLIMA reinforces the central role of women and youth in environmental protection. The activity also commemorates National Environmental Awareness Month, as mandated under Republic Act No. 9512 or the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008.

The program commenced with an orientation on proper mangrove planting and propagule harvesting, led by Kagawad Rio Gonzaga, who demonstrated correct techniques and explained the ecological importance of mangrove ecosystems. Participants learned how mangroves act as natural shields against storm surges, safeguard biodiversity, and serve as essential components of climate adaptation efforts.

Following the orientation, students and volunteers participated in hands-on mangrove planting and propagule harvesting, carefully securing each seedling to promote healthy growth. To further support the restoration of Bayug Island, the participants also conducted a coastal clean-up, removing waste and debris entangled in the branches of young mangroves—an effort vital for increasing their survival and maintaining ecological balance.

Under the leadership of Mr. Yongco, Project CLIMA showcased how women and youth can take the lead in climate-responsive community actions. The initiative highlighted the transformative power of collaborative environmental stewardship and reinforced MSU-IIT’s commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and community-driven climate solutions.

As National Environmental Awareness Month continues, Project CLIMA serves as a compelling reminder that protecting the environment is both a shared responsibility and a powerful expression of hope for future generations.
