MSU-IIT students sustain their exemplary academic performance in meaningful external engagements with the participation of the BS Economics students and faculty in the 63rd Philippine Economic Society (PES) Annual Meeting and Conference on November 7, 2025, and in the 20th International Convention of the East Asian Economic Association (EAEA) on November 8-9, 2025, both held at Makati Shangri-La, Metro Manila.
With the theme “An Economy that Works for People: Sustaining Economic Progress Amidst Global Polycrisis,” the 63rd PES Annual Meeting and Conference had discussions surrounding national recovery, global tensions, technology-driven disruptions, poverty trends, and the challenge of promoting inclusive growth. Three studies from MSU-IIT significantly contributed to the conversation: (1) “Digitalization and Agricultural Output: Evidence from Selected Asian Countries” by Al-gafar C. Mauna, Jafar S. Zamora, Dexter C. Cartajenas, Maica Angela C. Mangapis, and their adviser, Asst. Prof. Charlyn M. Capulong, (2) “The Nexus of Marine Sustainability on Blue Economy: An Evidence from Asian Countries” by Jerry II C. Daan, Arjay Bargamento, Jonah Mir S. Bahan, and Precious Margarette E. Amarga, guided by their adviser, Assoc. Prof. Martha Joy J. Abing, PhD, and (3) “Beyond the Bin: Waste Recycling for Poverty Reduction–Evidence from Selected Countries” by Kaye Eule Paz S. Miape, Nina Joy B. Lopez, Ismael Bin Abdullah M. Ali, Jeila Mae B. Magno, and Andrea Jane A. Abella, with Assoc. Prof. Martha Joy J. Abing, PhD, as their adviser.

Bringing together scholars and policymakers to examine development challenges in the region, the MSU-IIT delegation also participated in the discussions under the theme “Navigating Economic Transition, Inclusion, Innovation, and Resilience in Asia” during the EAEA. Alongside the studies of Mauna, Zamora, Cartajenas, Mangapis, Daan, Bargamento, Bahan, and Amarga previously showcased in PES, studies by Hezekiah O. Valdez, Ayesha Mae I. Adam, Grace R. Suan, Sittie Haira A. Salong, and As-ad E. Abdulatip under the mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Martha Joy J. Abing, PhD, entitled “Women in Parliament on Renewable Energy Production: Evidence from ASEAN Countries,” and by Louie Ayade, with adviser, Asst. Prof. Charlyn M. Capulong’s paper “Does the ASEAN Smart Cities Network Promote Climate Resilience?: Mechanisms and Heterogeneity” were also given the spotlight.

Adding to the achievements of the department, a faculty member of the Department of Economics also presented her paper called “The Influence of Government Environmental Protection Spending on Life Expectancy at Birth: The Case of Asia.”
According to Zamora, one of the participants, their involvement in both PES and EAEA marked a significant milestone in their journey as economics students, reflecting the culture of their department and MSU-IIT’s commitment to creating “policy-relevant work that responds to the needs of both the country and the region.”
