The Mining Engineering Program of the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) continues to strengthen its international collaborations through ongoing dialogues with the European Union (EU) Delegation to the Philippines and the Embassy of Sweden in Manila.
With the goal of advancing sustainable and responsible mineral resource management in the Philippines, Environmental Management (EM) Program Coordinator Engr. Adrian Keith R. Caamiño met with H.E. Anna Ferry, Swedish Ambassador to the Philippines, and Mr. Johan Lennefalk, Trade Commissioner of Business Sweden, on September 16, 2025, at the Swedish Embassy in Manila to discuss updates regarding the academic and research partnership between MSU-IIT and the Swedish School of Mines.
The dialogue emphasized the shared commitment to sustainability and innovation in the mineral industry, drawing on Sweden’s global reputation as a leader in responsible mining. Sweden is widely recognized for its advanced exploration and extraction technologies, environmental stewardship, and strong trilateral collaboration among government, industry, and academia.
Engr. Caamiño, who completed his Master's degree in Resource Engineering with a specialization in Geometallurgy, finished his master’s thesis at the Swedish School of Mines in 2023. Earlier this year, he represented the academic sector in the Philippine government's High-Level Mining Delegation to Sweden, which included then-DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, MGB Director Michael V. Cabalda, and other technical personnel.
In a separate meeting on September 14, 2025, Engr. Caamiño also met with Ms. Thelma Gecolea, Public Affairs Officer of the EU Delegation to the Philippines, to explore opportunities for EU-supported initiatives. The discussions centered on potential community-based programs and projects aimed at supporting the local minerals industry and promoting inclusive, sustainable development.
These strategic engagements mark a significant step forward in MSU-IIT’s mission to position itself as a leader in mining education and research, while contributing to national and global goals for sustainable development and environmental responsibility.
