MSE students and faculty clinch awards for Research, Innovation, and Dedication at SPVM 2025

Nov 05 2025

The Department of Materials and Resources Engineering and Technology (DMRET) celebrated a major triumph as its graduate students and faculty from the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) program clinched significant awards at the recently concluded 27th Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao (SPVM) National Physics Conference.

Held in conjunction with a series of international meetings, including the 2025 International Conference on Advanced Functional Materials and Nanotechnology (ICAFMN), 2025 International Meeting on Complex Systems (IMCS), 2025 International Conference on Particles and Radiation (ICPR), 2nd International Symposium on Sustainable Nanomaterials Addressing Environmental Challenges (ISSNAEC), and ST&I National Pitching Competition on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the event took place at the University of San Agustin (USA), Iloilo City from October 23-25, 2025.

Innovation Takes the Podium

The entrepreneurial spirit was on full display as an MSE graduate student, Engr. Glenn Ruel F. Maujon secured 3rd place in the highly competitive ST&I National Pitching Competition on SDG. Out of 19 participating teams in the student categories, Engr. Maujon’s research-based start-up proposal titled, “Biosilx: An Agro-industrial Waste-based Silica Powders,” impressed the judges with its innovative approach to sustainability through converting waste into valuable silica powders advancing SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13: Climate Change, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 14: Life Below Water, and SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals.

The momentum continued in the research poster presentation categories. Fellow MSE student Maria Elisa Refugio was recognized for excellence in research presentation. Engr. Refugio clinched the Best Poster Presentation in the ICAFMN for her work, titled “A Sustainable Synthesis of Sodium– Aluminosilicate Powder from Rice Husk Ash for Ceramic Applications.” This distinction highlights the high quality of materials science research being conducted by the students.

Faculty Recognition and Career Dedication

Simultaneously, in faculty news, Dr. Liezl M. Jabile received a prestigious nod for her sustained commitment to the scientific community. The SPVM was pleased to confer upon her the Neutrino Award in recognition of her active participation in SPVM National Conferences for five consecutive years. This award celebrates a sustained commitment to advancing physics and allied fields in the country.

Rounding out the faculty’s contribution, Dr. Raymond V. Rivera-Virtudazo was featured as a guest speaker at the ISSNAEC, where he received a plaque of appreciation for his expert talk on Nanoengineered Micro–Mesoporous Silicate from Rice Hull Ash: A Green Route for Addressing Environmental Challenges.

The massive multi-conference, organized by MSU-IIT and USA, in partnership with the Yuchengco Center and Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabat University of Thailand, served as a vital platform for dynamic exchange and collaboration, highlighting the significant contributions of the DMRET team to physics, nanotechnology, and sustainable innovation.
