MSU-IIT CHS faculty member speaks at UMKLA’s int’l webinar

Assistant Professor Jessica B. Orias, MAN, RN, from the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology College of Health Sciences, served as an international expert speaker at the “Mental Health & Me: Surviving Social Media Without Losing Myself “ International Webinar 2025, hosted by Universitas Muhammadiyah Klaten in Indonesia.

The webinar, part of UMKLA’s internationalization program, focused on the impact of social media on mental health, particularly among Gen Zs. It gathered around 500 online participants from various countries.

The event was opened by Saifudin Zuhri, Dean of UMKLA’s Faculty of Health and Technology, who stated that the goal of the webinar is to realize the faculty’s vision of becoming a globally recognized institution, strengthening UMKLA’s international presence, particularly within Southeast Asia.

The program also included a message from the Regent of Klaten, Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo, who discussed practical ways to maintain mental health. 

Alongside Asst. Prof. Orias, other presenters included Prof. Achir Yani S. Hamid, MN, DNSc, Professor of Mental Health–Psychiatric Nursing at the University of Indonesia, and Dr. Ns. Retno Yuli Hastuti, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Sp.Kep.Jiwa, a Psychiatric Nursing Lecturer from UMKLA. After the keynote speakers, the event continued with oral presentations of research from participating faculty and students.

Asst. Prof. Orias discussed the benefits and negative effects of social media, emphasizing that its impact depends more on how it is used than on the amount of time spent online. She also underscored the importance of open dialogue, emotional support, and digital literacy in helping adolescents develop healthy online habits and maintain their mental health and well-being.

In her reflection, Asst. Prof. Orias shared that while she initially felt nervous during her presentation, she was honored to represent MSU-IIT on an international platform. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the college’s internationalization efforts and to share insights on promoting mental wellness among young people.

This collaboration with UMKLA marks another step in the College of Health Sciences’ growing global initiatives to strengthen international partnerships and academic recognition.
