In a vibrant display of respect and gratitude for Iligan’s senior citizens, the Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) joined hands with the City Government of Iligan, the City Mayor’s Office–Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (CMO-OSCA), and the Federation of Senior Citizens of the Philippines (FSCAP) Iligan Chapter to host the 31st Elderly Filipino Week Celebration on October 25, 2025, at the MSU-IIT Gymnasium.
The one-day event, with the theme “Embracing Age: Living a Life with Dignity and Peace,” brought together thousands of senior citizens from various barangays in Iligan City to celebrate joy, recognition, and community spirit.
Honoring the Pillars of the Community
In his speech, City Mayor Frederick W. Siao expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all senior citizens, recognizing their invaluable contributions to their families, communities, and society.
“Our senior citizens are the pillars of our families and the inspiration behind our city’s progress,” Mayor Siao said. “Thank you for your sacrifices, enthusiasm, and love for Iligan. We celebrate you not only today but every day.”
The mayor also announced the implementation of a financial subsidy program for milestone seniors aged 80, 85, 90, 95, and 100, providing ₱5,000 for each qualified recipient and ₱50,000 for centenarians. He credited Vice Mayor Ernest Oliver “Wekwek” C. Uy and City Councilor Atty. Providencio “Bong” Abragan, Jr., Chair of the Committee on Senior Citizens, for supporting the ordinance that made this initiative possible.
“Not all LGUs can afford to provide this kind of assistance,” he said. “But Iligan City made sure to prioritize our elderly—because they deserve it.”

Messages of Inspiration and Gratitude
Vice Mayor Uy, Councilor Abragan, and FSCAP President Shiela Cabiles Jurado also shared messages of encouragement, emphasizing continued support and empowerment for the elderly sector. CSWDO Head Evelyn S. Madrio delivered her office’s report on programs and services dedicated to senior citizens’ welfare.
Adding to the day’s warmth, MSU-IIT Chancellor Prof. Alizedney M. Ditucalan, J.D., LL.M., offered words of reflection and appreciation:
“Peace of mind comes from knowing that you are valued,” he said, highlighting the university’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.
College of Health Sciences (CHS) Dean Dr. Minnie B. Mamauag delivered an uplifting message and spontaneously led a group dance that brought energy and laughter to the crowd. CHS Assistant Dean Assoc. Prof. Mae-Lanie O. Poblete, who served as the event’s master of ceremonies, kept spirits high with her lively hosting and motivational remarks.

A Celebration of Joy and Togetherness
The day’s festivities included exciting competitions such as vocal solo, folk dance, modern dance, and ballroom swing performances, showcasing the talents and vitality of Iligan’s senior citizens. Raffle draws and the distribution of 5 kilograms of rice per participant added to the merriment.
In his closing remarks, OSCA Head Edgar U. Navales expressed gratitude to all organizers, volunteers, and participants for making the event a success.
The 31st Elderly Filipino Week celebration at MSU-IIT stood as a heartfelt reminder that aging is not a limitation—but a celebration of wisdom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Filipino elderly.
