2023 International Training Program (ITP): Basic Concepts of Inclusively Co-Creating Citizen Science

When: 08:00 AM-05:00 PM -- Tuesday, May 02, 2023 TO Friday, May 12, 2023
Where:

Visayas State University,  Pangasugan, Baybay City, Leyte

Description:

The Visayas State University (VSU) and the Mindanao State University (MSU-IIT) are working with Hasselt University (Belgium) and KU Leuven (Belgium) to arrange a series of seminars on quantitative and qualitative techniques in citizen science research. This International Training Programme (ITP) is supported by the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR).

The chance to participate actively in regional environmental decision-making must frequently be made available to Filipino citizens. Due to its ability to increase the general public's grasp of these complicated topics and make communication between constituents and legislators easier, co-created citizen science is crucial to democratizing conservation policies.

These citizen science studies, however, necessitate careful planning and research because their data is frequently of poor quality. A thoughtful study design, conduct, and statistical analysis are often necessary to set up a meaningful community-based research project. This ITP intends to jointly enhance capability in citizen science research methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative.

There will be four two-week workshops held alternately at VSU and MSU-IIT, which will run from 2023 until 2025. Each workshop will consist of two five-day courses covering various themes in environmental citizen science methods. There will be a focus on using educational strategies that align with the Universal Design for Learning and citizen-science research techniques to strengthen minority communities.

For this year, the first of a series of workshops entitled “Basic Concepts of Inclusively Co-Creating Citizen Science” will be held in Visayas State University’s flagship campus in Baybay City, Leyte, from May 02 to 12, 2023. It consists of two intensive lecture-workshop courses, “Methods for Participatory Research in Inclusive Citizen Science,” which will be given by UHasselt Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Maristela Do Nascimento Rocha, and “Observational Studies and Causal Inference” by UHasselt Biostatistics Professor Prof. Dr. Olivier Thas.

Cost:

In line with the program, VLIR-UOS will award twenty (20) registrants with scholarship grants for the two-week workshop, including airfare, food, and accommodation (up to a reasonable amount). Another ten (10) slots are open for those willing to pay their expenses.
